Description

Date of original1940-12-30DescriptionB&W image taken at the Grasslands Research Division, Plant Research Bureau at Palmerston North. Shows the fire engine parked behind the burnt out building and a member of staff talking to a fireman. Taken the morning after a devastating fire of unknown cause raged through the building complex. The alarm was raised at 1.15am resulting in the fire brigade driving the two miles from their Palmerston North station, finding on arrival insufficient water to quell the fire. Eventually the nearby Turitea stream provided a good supply of water to be pumped into the engine, but sadly the fire had a good hold on the wooden structure.
