Date of originalNo dateDescriptionA close-up of an early type of 'sight-glass' milk flow indicator, in-situ, illustrating the sight glass, tubing and teat cups.
The indicator had a dual purpose: firstly to provide a means for visual inspection of the state of the milk being taken, and secondly, as an indicator of the end of milking.
These early models relied on the milker keeping the indicator in view, but as technology progressed, enhancements such as the Ruakura developed 'photo-transistor circuit' (1972) which detected the level of milk-air flow negated the need for constant viewing.
The heyday of milking research at Ruakura (from the late 1940's onwards) saw the development of the 'Ruakura milk flow indicator', followed by the 'Ruakura milking machine' (1954).
Handwritten on the card are various photograph reference numbers.
